Complete Our Streets Town Hall Meeting Gathers Comments from
Citizens
(Fall 2007) More than 150 Tulsa residents attended a town hall
meeting sponsored by the Complete Our Streets panel assembled by
Mayor Kathy Taylor and Councilor Bill Martinson. Six members of the
panel, chaired by Sharon King Davis and Dewey Bartlett Jr.,
listened to 28 citizens speak for about three minutes each on how
Tulsa should improve its streets.
The Complete Our Streets
panel is conducting a study of how to improve Tulsa's streets in
three areas: contracting, smart urban design, and financing. They
will present recommendations to the Mayor and to the City Council
by December 4. Residents may submit comments and information to the
panel by contacting the Mayor's Action Center at 596-2100 or email.
Besides Sharon King Davis and Dewey Bartlett Jr., other Complete
Our Streets panel members present at the town hall meeting were
Derek Gates, Patty Eaton, Ron Bussert and Bob Kuhn. Residents spoke
on topics including quality control of construction projects, more
options for mass transit, additional funding sources for streets,
and traffic signal synchronization to improve traffic flow.
Several avid bicyclists also expressed the need for wider and
smoother streets for bicycle transportation, traffic signals that
detect bicycles and an ordinance requiring motorists to pass
bicyclists in an adjacent lane. They said although bike lanes are
well-intentioned, most motorists don't notice them and bicyclists
develop a false sense of security.
