Recent Sustainability Accomplishments (2008-2009)

Energy

  • Small overall decrease in energy spending in buildings between FY07 and FY08
  • Numerous lighting, window, roof and HVAC retrofits to various City of Tulsa facilities
  • The Vehicle Pre-Purchase Analysis was implemented with a 10% fuel use reduction goal
  • The move to One Technology reduced overall energy expenditures

Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions

  • Instituted a City-wide "no-idle" policy
  • Procured and put in service one CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) Refuse Collection Truck using CMAQ grant funding
  • Completed the underutilized vehicle survey, resulting in a decrease in fleet size.
  • Budgeted for two additional CNG refuse trucks, FY 2009
  • Budgeted for 11 additional CNG Honda Civics
  • Budgetefd for 66 Ford Escape hybrids"
  • Eight segwys are currently in service City-wide
  • One diesel hybrid MTTA bus is currently in service
  • Sought grants through BlueSkyways to cover the incremental cost of alternative fueld vehicles (was not awarded to COT)
  • Seeking grants through Clean Cities for CNG refuelijng infrastructure expansion
  • Developed a COT plan for CNG
  • Expanded the Tulsa Green Fleet
  • Fast-fill CNG station completed with CMAQ funding
  • Vapor recovery system is fully functional on all COT unleaded fuel dispensers. 

Waste Reduction

  • 2 Waste Oil heaters currently in use, and a study is underway to identify other possible locations
  • Curbside recycling subscriptions have incresed from seven to ten percent since March 2007
  • The 1+1 Pilot Program saw 'set out' increased of 13-33%, indicating a willingness on the part of Tulsa citizens to recycle
  • FY08 saw an increase of 18% in recycling tonscollected, the largest increase of any year to date.
  • Solid waste diversion from all recycling within COT was estimated at 40-50%
  • Cardboard, aluminum and plastic were recycled collectively for the first time in any COT facility (One Technology Center(
  • A program is being developed to reduce paper use in COT by 40%
  • Multi-function machines in common areas have been set for duplex printing (double-sided) and in black ink only, by default

  • Green Traveler portal is accessed through COT employee intranet, allowing the city to track the number of employees participating and calculate the  pounds of emissions that have been saved.
