City of Tulsa, Home Builders Association of Greater Tulsa Offering lead-based paint EPA certification training
ARCHIVED PRESS RELEASE: Published 6-24-2010
The City of Tulsa, in cooperation with the Home Builders
Association of Greater Tulsa, will begin offering training classes
for renovation, repair and painting contractors to obtain
Environmental Protection Agency certification regarding lead-based
paint. The City's Working In Neighborhoods Department Housing
Division will provide instructors, and the Home Builders
Association will facilitate registration and serve as the location
for classes. Information is available online.
Enrollment is open for two classes scheduled for July, and two
for August: July 8, July 29, August 12 and August 26. Each class
has a capacity of 24 participants - no more than two people from
the same firm in a class.
Cost for the eight-hour training class is $185 per student,
which includes materials, breakfast and lunch. Tulsa Home Builders
Association members receive a $60 discount. To register, contact
the Home Builders Association at 918-663-1100. Upon completion of
the eight-hour training sessions, participants may be certified for
five years, after which they will need to renew certification with
a four-hour refresher course.
Since April 22, 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency has
required that firms working in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied
facilities must be certified and use lead-safe work practices
during renovations. The penalty for noncompliance is up to $32,500
per day, per violation and possible jail time.
The Environmental Protection Agency has extended its deadline
for certification from April 22, 2010 to Oct. 1, 2010. Contractors
must enroll in a training class by Sept. 30, and complete the
training by Dec. 31, to comply with the rule.
For the past 10 years, the City of Tulsa has provided lead-based
paint instruction required by the Department of Housing and Urban
Development. Now the City will add the EPA instruction as well. The
City has three staff members qualified as abatement supervisors and
six staff members who serve as certified risk assessors.
